The pioneers of outback Australia were a diverse bunch, especially the cameleers. A century and a half later their legacy struggles to find its place within Australia’s national identity. In the outback town of Broken Hill, descendants form a camel procession to celebrate the contribution of the cameleer Abdul Khalik by launching a balloon carrying his image into the sky.
