After meeting as children over a series of summers in the Italian Alps, Pietro and Bruno reunite as adults to build a mountainside cottage which becomes a site of both reflection and reconciliation. In The Eight Mountains, Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte trace with exquisite beauty and grace the life trajectories of two men whose peak moments and low ebbs become one with the landscape that has shaped them. The most boring characters, dialogue and, in general, story that you can see in a movie from the mountains. In a movie from the mountains emasculatingly shot in 4:3 format. ()
A bit kitsch (which is not unusual with van Groeningen), but in this particular case I don't mind it. Visually gorgeous, with an image format that gives it a pleasantly retro analogue feel. If the voiceover of the adult Pietro had been reduced or completely disappeared, the film would have been at least ten percent better. Despite the relatively exorbitant runtime, I was not bored, which I appreciate with a weak four. (56th KVIFF) ()
