In this hilariously raunchy comedy, dysfunctional American siblings Alice (Kristen Bell) and Paul (Ben Platt) along with their ever-optimistic mom (Allison Janney), are invited to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) as a chance for them to reconnect as – more or less – adults, and learn to love each other like they once did. English A mediocre relationship comedy from Amazon that meets quotas even more strictly than Netflix, so it's going to give the bigots a hard time. I'm a little disappointed that the film doesn't take place at a wedding, I was looking forward to an hour long wedding full of annoying people shitting all over each other, because weddings have good potential to be funny, but this is more about wedding preparation and family relationships. No one here is famous except for Kristen Bell, so it's a second-rate comedy, but it does get the occasional laugh. (the gay threesome was funny, but had even more potential), and Kristen Bell is funny in places, though she acts like a typical woman and thus lost my sympathy. Americans can't do comedy as well as Europe anymore and that's been true for a good few years now. 55% ()

English I didn't expect 52% to produce such a funny comedy! At its core, it's a simple family romp where the siblings and parents don't really like each other and at reunite after a long time at a wedding and have to pretend to like each other, but it works unexpectedly well. The biggest draw are the likable characters who crack jokes every minute, so there's no shortage of humour – the gay brother and the trolling disgruntled sister are great and when I had a great time with the gay threesome. In the last 20 minutes the film loses a bit of steam, especially in terms of humour, and I could have imagined a more intense finale at the wedding, given that this is where all the action was directed, but otherwise I'm satisfied and the film deserves a lower 4 stars. It's a fine feel good comedy with a nice running time, nothing groundbreaking, but otherwise a decent surprise. ()
