Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its eye-popping photography and ravishing, epochal soundtrack, Black Orpheus was an international cultural event, and it kicked off the bossa nova craze that set hi-fis across America spinning. This film definitely has something to it. Marcel Camus took a classic story and transferred it into a unique and exotic setting, where it may seem like it wouldn't work, but it does well thanks to non-actors and interesting music. However, something essential didn't transfer to me, and I didn't have the feeling that I was watching a pivotal cinematic work. ()
