John, a skipper, goes ashore while his ship reprovisions. He meets Anita, a waitress, who has an illegitimate daughter, Helena. John accompanies Anita and Helena to the nearby city of Malmö for a day's excursion. On impulse, he takes them across the sound to Copenhagen. At the end of a happy day, they have dinner in her cottage. Both are eager neither to hurt nor to be hurt, emotionally, but, eventually, they do make love. In the morning, as John prepares to ship out again, he learns that Anita has left the village for her vacation. After only a few moments' hesitation, he phones her and proposes marriage.
