Old friends and business associates Tony (Jack Lemmon) and Felix (Robert Mitchum) are getting along swimmingly until an attractive woman named Irena (Rita Hayworth) creates a discord between the allies and disrupts their Caribbean smuggling operation. When an envious Felix betrays Tony, the two friends engage in a bitter fight for the girl, the business and their pride, but ultimately realize that their friendship is most important of all.
