Marseille, 1814. Edmund, captain of a ship named The Pharaoh, is going to marry Mercedes, who is the object of military man Fernand’s affection. Fernand and Danglars, who wants to be captain of The Pharaoh, accuse Edmund of being a Bonapartist so that he is taken prisoner on his wedding day and sent to the terrible castle of If. There, Edmund communicates through a hole in the wall with the priest Faria, who is a prisoner in the neighboring cell. Before dying, Faria reveals to Edmund where he has hidden his treasure. Edmund manages to escape and, with Faria’s riches, becomes the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, and plans his revenge. (Morelia International Film Festival)
