English Werich is simply unreal in this role. He's not evil, but he's quite the scoundrel. It's just that those idiots deserve it. The way people are described in the film is incredibly relevant, and it should be reflected in the present as well. People are stupid, but they don't mind that fact if they're doing well in life. Perhaps they just need to choose their hero carefully. ()

English "How about we do a funeral instead of a May Day carnival? Sir, would you die for us on the first of May?" - "I can’t in the morning, I will be choosing the subscribers to the parade." A very well cast satire, still apt, funny and compelling. But Václav Wasserman made a similar "revisionist" theme again twenty years later - in Nejlepší člověk with Vlasta Burian - and in my opinion even better. As far as the music is concerned, I can't believe that only the song "Šaty dělaj člověka" comes from Jaroslav Ježek's pen, because especially the song that sounds when Kaplan and the other convicts leave the prison is pure Ježek. If it was composed by Julius Kalaš, then hats off to him. ()
