English I've known the story of Božena Němcová’s Grandmother since time immemorial, and although this version is in many respects faithful to the source material, I found it at times so devoid of heart that I felt some scenes seemed too artificial. But that's a problem with a lot of old films. In short, one of those films where the printed source material is superior. ()

English I never really got into this Czech classic, and I've never read the book. I don't know if that will ever change, because I certainly don't have the need to read it. However, even though I don't feel like reading that story, I can't deny that there's something beautiful Czech in it, something that makes you reflect on who you really are and where you are. But don’t worry, that will fade away after you watch it. ()
