English I prefer John Wayne in westerns over war films, but the latter are also an inseparable part of his career. In the film Back to Bataan, he was joined by another great actor in Anthony Quinn. The war film focuses on the uprising in the Philippines, where the locals resisted Japanese rule. The film isn’t dominated by either of the acting giants but by the actor playing young Maximo, who steals the film with his performance, and his fate is the strongest moment. The shootouts in the film are somewhat weak, but similar issues can be seen in newer films as well, so I wouldn’t judge it too harshly. ()
