Quirt Evans is a hardened criminal bent on tracking down the man responsible for his foster father's murder. When Evans is wounded in a scuffle, a kindly Quaker family takes him in. Unexpectedly, the tough outlaw begins to fall in love with the family's innocent daughter Penelope (Gail Russell), who encourages Quirt to become an upstanding man of good character. Although he makes great strides to change his ways, Evans is plagued with the desire to get vengeance for his slain foster father and finds it difficult to tread the path of straight and narrow.
