John Wayne is Jacob McCandles, an aging cowboy in an Old West that is on the verge of modernization. When his eight-year-old grandson is kidnapped by a violent gang led by the evil John Fain (Richard Boone), Jacob's estranged wife (Maureen O' Hara) enlists his help to rescue the boy. English A somewhat classic story from towards the end of the Duke's career. He's already an aging cowboy who is passing the torch to younger people. Here, he meets his sons to fulfill a task for his ex-wife and seeks revenge on a few individuals. It's an expedition where the father and sons bond and the best moments are when the father clearly demonstrates whose is still stronger among them. John Wayne excels in the comedic role, yet he remains a tough guy through and through, and you simply have to believe in him. I adore the man, even if the story itself isn't a great western. ()
