If it didn't end amusingly, especially on that mysterious level, it would have been a much more successful and interesting film for its time. Even so, it's a good combination - the blend of gold hunting, villains, an honorable guy, and a phantom surprisingly works very well. Moreover, John Wayne demonstrates that he truly wasn't afraid of stunt work in his scenes.
