John Wayne is John Travers - a U.S. Marshal who is charged with the duty of tracking down a villainous chieftain known only as "The Shadow," who is responsible for committing several unsolved murders. Hoping to flush the villain out, Travers takes over as sheriff of the town where the mysterious murders have occurred. Along with his pal Yak (Yakima Canutt), John discovers a tunnel leading from the sheriff's office to a sinister cave, which turns out to be "The Shadow's" hideout. It doesn't take long for Travers to reveal the killer's true identity, but before he takes care of the vile villain, John must first save a damsel in distress (Verna Hillie). When there's someone out there picking off sheriffs one by one, it takes someone who can take down the killer to put on the star. Of course, the one who can handle it is the young man with the face of John Wayne, who simply gets the job done. One of the better films of its time, but it's quite evident how the individual sets, costumes, and sounds were reused over and over.
