As Robb Stark and his northern army continue the war against the Lannisters, Tyrion arrives in King's Landing to counsel Joffrey and temper the young king's excesses. On the island of Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon plots an invasion to claim his late brother's throne, allying himself with the fiery Melisandre, a strange priestess of a stranger god. Across the sea, Daenerys, her three young dragons, and khalasar trek through the Red Waste in search of allies, or water. The second season kicks off with a death in combat followed by some wineboarding, quickly establishing that it won't be a walk in the park. Stannis Baratheon and his entourage make an intriguing debut, while the storyline with Daenerys and the remnants of Drogo's khalasar feels a bit stagnant. Overall, though, the episode works brilliantly.

Obviously, the second episode draws the lines much faster than the first. Everything about the king and Kings Landing is a riveting, looming battle of nations about to begin. The introduction of new players to the game is pleasingly brief, but probably absolutely crucial for future episodes.
