To escape the burdens of rule, Sweden's Queen Christina rides into the countryside disguised as a boy. There she meets and secretly falls for a dashing Spanish envoy on his way to the royal court. Imagine the envoy's delighted surprise when he and the young "nobleman" must share a bed at an overcrowded inn. "It had been so enchanting to be a woman, not a queen. Just a woman in a man's arms," Christina murmurs to her lover when her true identity is revealed. But she knows her people will not accept her marriage to a foreigner. Torn between her duty and her heart, she must make a fateful decision. (official distributor synopsis)

English Greta Garbo is truly captivating in this film, and I must say she enchanted me much more than someone like Marlene Dietrich. The camera focuses intensely on Greta, but it's by no means a forced obsession; rather, it's a fascination with her character, beauty, and charisma. The story isn't the best, but it definitely still makes sense and captivates, even though historical accuracy isn't really something that can be discussed. ()

English The great triumph of the return of the divine Garbo after she wanted to retire in 1932. Thanks go not to MGM's bigwigs, but to Salka Viertel. The congenial consensus eventually manifested itself towards Gilbert, but unfortunately, it was too late for him. Garbo & Gilbert Forever! ()
