When Van Peebles is being good, Leary is bad, and Lambert rides the wave of Belmondo’s crazy grimaces in an ugly way, it’s no surprise that the Matador is Arch Stanton. If you let your brain idle, there’s a chance you’ll enjoy Deran Sarafian's not-so-original buddy movie, even without the five minutes of violence and profanity cut by the studio for rating reasons, which will never see the light of the B-movie world. It can also be seen as a Marvel spin-off, showing how Professor Xavier trained his telepathic abilities under layers of dirt before getting his hi-tech gadgets.

If Sergio Leone had made a buddy action B-movie in a 1990s style, it would have turned out something like this. And I’m not speaking only about the opening scene.
