English For a debut, an enjoyable B-movie action flick with a likeable hero and an attractive setting dealing with local pirates terrorizing the neighborhood. At times I was a little bothered by the visibly weaker CGI, especially for the gore (blood and blown heads abound here though) and the fights aren't the worst, but they don't outright dazzle. 60%. English An Australian-Indonesian film, where the budget might not boast a huge number of zeros, but it still maintains a decent standard compared to other B-movies. The main protagonist is a likable guy... yes... trying to escape his rough past... yes... bonds with a boy and his family... yes... villains show up and threaten them... yes... he gets angry and unleashes a bloody rampage to save them... yes. This summary could apply to tons of films, but Message Man really caught my interest. I hadn’t heard of Paul O'Brien before, but I might start following his future work. Yes, the action scenes are cheap and B-movie-like, but that seems to have been the creators' intention. However, there are a few scenes that could rival more expensive Hollywood productions. Next time, I’d suggest adding more action and cutting down on the dialogue, as it slows the pace and can bore the viewer. I must give the film credit that towards the end when things take a turn, and the main character is just walking around and taking out enemies. It probably won’t get a sequel, but if it happens, I wouldn’t mind. I give it 62%. ()
