One of the most dramatic attempts by an Eastern European nation to defy Soviet control during the Cold War period took place in Hungary in 1956. On August 16, 1958, two Hungarian immigrants break into the Hungarian embassy in Bern and take the ambassador hostage. As the Swiss police besiege the building and a group of Hungarian immigrants shows up on the street to demonstrate, a tense, twist-filled hostage drama plays out behind the closed doors of the embassy.
Based on a true story about the aftermath of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, the film is a fictional account of the 1958 attack against the Hungarian embassy in Bern. (IFF Bratislava)

English Hungarian history isn’t exactly my strong suit, so I’m always up for a film that dives into their past. The Ambassador to Bern has a compelling story, gets straight to the point, and keeps the tension alive from start to finish. What more could you ask for? Another solid Hungarian film that deserves some attention. ()
