Emir Kusturica’s debut is a raw glimpse into Balkan life. Picture rundown houses you'd never set foot in, carnival workers slogging through muddy fields, and 14-year-olds smoking by a shooting range, washing down the smoke with homemade booze stolen from a drunk dad. The oppressive heat is palpable even if the camera doesn't show it. It's a bit of desperation, but in that uniquely Balkan way that makes it almost charming.
