Cameron Post (Chloë Grace Moretz) looks the part of a perfect high school girl. But after she’s caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night, Cameron is quickly shipped off to a conversion therapy center that treats teens “struggling with same-sex attraction.” At the facility, Cameron is subjected to outlandish discipline, dubious “de-gaying” methods, and earnest Christian rock songs—but this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely gay community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers, and she’s able to find her place among fellow outcasts. (Vertigo Releasing)

English A pretty average coming-of-age film. The story about the re-education of a girl with lesbian tendencies flows exactly as you’d expect. Her confrontations with the fanatical Christian counselors are occasionally interesting but lack depth. Mostly, it’s just about being told that being gay is a sin, which the main characters largely ignore. They aren't broken by it and simply adapt to the regime and resist the pressure. The film feels somewhat unnecessary, much like the efforts of the religious zealots trying to eradicate the "evil" from these confused teens. The message is clear but feels outdated in today’s world where most people no longer look down on homosexuality, especially when presented this bluntly. If the goal was to show how tough it was for young homosexuals in the 90s, it could have been done with much more urgency and without pulling punches. As it stands, despite the serious subject matter, it felt too laid-back. ()
