Love, Death & Robots

The series has eighteen episodes in total, where four are downright epic and visual juggernauts (Sonnie's Edge, Secret War, Shape-Shifters and Beyond the Aquila Rift) the other ten are balancing between above average and average and I guess only four are slightly below average, but I believe everyone will find something different to like. Genre-wise, it's a mix of cyberpunk and horror fantasy, and it’s definitely a series worth watching. The highlight is the Secret War short story, where Russians fight ghouls and it's the ultimate cinema experience, something that hasn't been seen since perhaps Avatar. Visually, it's absolutely awesome with an epic soundtrack and solid gore. I'm blown away by this story and I won't believe anyone who says otherwise. I like short stories. It's quite a complex discipline, because the creators have to entice, surprise, get a real story going and still somehow end it so that the viewer doesn't feel robbed at the end. Most of the short stories from Love, Death & Robots were successful in this regard. Whether the shorts were purely action (serious or funny), whether it was a comedy about a yogurt that took over the Earth, or three robots - tourists in a post-apocalyptic world, whether it was unadulterated horror with Dracula, in a way we haven't seen before, or with werewolf soldiers or an abandoned astronaut, whether it was philosophical reflection or a magical desert ghost story... Everything impressed me in some way. The variety of screenwriters, directors and animated films gave it drive, so almost every film is animated in a different style and conceived differently - once it affectionately references Aliens, other times it parodies The Terminator with the same love... I'm going to watch a number of those films again._____The second series has fewer episodes, but both the quality and diversity remained. I could see perhaps every single one of the shorts as a feature film, most probably the last installment with the giant on the beach. It was perfect. (03/22/2019)

Netflix is on fire! They’re producing so much content that I can barely keep up with what’s available. However, an anthology animated series where each short offers a different plot is something we haven’t really seen before. I was intrigued by how each episode showcased a different style of animation, whether simpler or highly sophisticated. Admittedly, the quality did vary. The start was strong, especially with the episode Sonnie's Edge, which I recommend. It had an interesting premise with a surprising twist. Speaking of twists, the story in No. 7 really shocked me. I also loved the incredibly good music that accompanied the entire episode. The tenth episode with werewolves in the army didn’t disappoint, nor did the eleventh with its more horror-oriented take on gravity. But the finale was the BEST OF. Soviet soldiers battling an alien army was a visual and narrative delight, and it could have easily been spun off into its own series. Even the other stories weren’t bad and were more on the better side of average. Overall, I give it 8/10. (04/02/2019)
