English The Poles returned here in terms of filmmaking and shot what an American would not be afraid to shoot at the turn of the millennium. A magnificent historical period film, rich in mass war scenes from the trenches of World War I, but also playing with characters, adding a little (actually a lot) of pathos and wrapping it in a romantic wave, so that even grandma finds herself in it. I enjoyed it. It was magnificent, it was multinational, it was epic. And who in Europe today can pull off something similar? I have a feeling that maybe only the Poles. They can do everything. Wasn't that said before? ()

English Somewhat disappointing. The film was based on events I knew nothing about, and it could have been a great experience if the filmmakers hadn't made it so melodramatic and overly heroic, and if they hadn't grafted a love story onto the plot, stretching out the running time to four hours. The way the subject was handled doesn’t hold a candle to De Oost. Shame about the wasted potential. ()
