Young Christian Ferro (Andrea Carpenzano) is a born striker and the pride of A.S. Roma. The cosseted football star is always up for anything, but the excesses in the celebrity’s private life are starting to jeopardise a promising career. A radical decision from the club president isn’t long in coming, and personal tutor Valerio (Stefano Accorsi) appears on the scene facing a seemingly impossible task. Talented Leonardo D’Agostini’s fine debut, an intelligent comedy that goes behind the scenes of one of the best loved football clubs, will delight even those who think ball sports are ridiculous. English Good idea from Italians, to shoot a story about a talented footballer who doesn't have shit in his head, but has not realized it yet. His young brain is absorbed by Italian liras. I enjoyed it, it was nice to watch, besides his mentor was properly sharp. Generally, I could say it's a classic dramedy with a pleasant Hollywood feeling, but the ending deserved a fourth star. ()

English I admired the man who, after the festival screening of The Champion, at the end of a discussion with the makers of the movie, described this comedy as "a rich story with a different take on the basic Hollywood comedies," while The Champion fits into that formula perfectly and delivers classic plot clichés without any innovations or surprises. It is probably enough for most audiences, but even for a light, mindless comedy to take my mind off things, it just isn't enough for me. [KVIFF 2019] ()
