It's so silly that it could actually be funny. The actors overact a lot, so it's quite watchable in some places, but it's also a question of how things were filmed more than 80 years ago. It's evident that the transition to sound film wasn't entirely seamless, but there was still an important influence from theatrical and vaudeville approaches.
