This ballad-like and floating film revives three days of the ageing Déryné, at the culmination of her career. In the semi-dark corridor Déryné looks in the mirror. She knows all about her job now but is losing her feminine attractiveness. A new star is born, Mrs. Schodel, stylish and playing from "nerves". They start to regard Déryné as conservative in her roles. After eighteenth years she returns to her husband. The warm passivity of the manor-house, the alien and faithful philistine husband only strengthen Déryné's final loneliness. She flees, back to the theatre. She expects dramatic roles, but only the old Jancsó celebrates her greatness in the fog descending on the theatre-garden. (official distributor synopsis)
