Texas Chainsaw Massacre

A desperate attempt to update a cult classic, where I find it somewhat comforting that it could have turned out even worse. There's some pretty cool carnage in places, but the overall lack of imagination leaves you with the impression of a dull and uninventive copy of the original film, with only a casting change and the addition of cell phones. And the occasional tension of the atmosphere doesn't really save it, unfortunately. [50%] (02/19/2022)

With its unfortunate casting and below-average screenplay, this attempt at a direct sequel to the original (after many years) has only one memorable scene – the bloody slaughter on a bus. That seemed to be the screenwriters’ initial idea, around which they then came up with the rest of the dead-weight plot. In terms of directing, it would definitely have been helped by a better atmosphere of the location and more interesting characters, but that didn’t happen. And the grandmother, who, as the only survivor from the first film, wants revenge for the trauma of her youth, is almost laughable. (03/06/2022)

Exactly what I expected - horrible. Along with the new Scream and Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre can be counted among the "not good" sequels to good cult franchises, and I knew from the first murder that it was going to be bad. The film actually has all the elements that B-movie slashers have: horrible and annoying characters (rich influencers) whom you wish death, disastrous logic, a plot that starts classically at a gas station, locals clash, arrive at their destination and then it's just carnage. The gore is practically the only positive thing in the film, because that's all I can find. Even the murders don't make any sense, and that's a whole new level of stupidity, because they want to convince us that it's possible to break someone's wrist with one hand and then stab them to death with a bone sticking out of the victim... They make they take us for morons and it's starting to piss me off, just like with the aforementioned films. I'm sick of it, and I reject comments like "it's a slasher, what do you want here" on principle, because when someone acts like an asshole for the whole 90 minutes, it's hard for the viewer to fully concentrate on the bloodbath. The murderous grandmother and the wannabe twist at the end is just a slap in the face to all of us who were expecting a decent and at least average slasher flick. It seems like Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a film that each generation revisits. For me, the one from the early 2000s left an impact, and maybe this version will resonate with a younger audience. But honestly, it’s pretty forgettable. There are a few gore moments, but nothing that really sets it apart from any other horror flick. (02/23/2022)

I didn’t mind it. Considering how troubled the production was, and that it landed quietly on Netflix instead of heading to theaters, the new addition to the Leatherface franchise is quite fine (certainly better than the last two, maybe three films). I applaud the short runtime and the hearty gore scenes. What is disappointing is the little space they gave to Sally from the original film (she's only here because legacy sequels are modern now, and she misses her chance to be satisfied years later) and the flatness of the other characters - they sometimes talk just to talk. Of course, it could have been a lot better, but if I'm going to take it as a slasher one-off, I don't have much to complain about (especially compared to, say, the last return of another iconic horror character, the more ambitious Halloween Kills).
