Silent Night

As another user has said, Silent Night would have been a near-perfect film, very skillfully mixing all genres from comedy with dry humour to global catastrophe, existential drama to dense psychological insight into the minds of the characters, but the glaring and obvious similarity to the current covid-antivax situation got incredibly on my nerves throughout the film. And I don't share the optimism my colleague in the sense of "maybe they meant it that way, or as a never give up motto", because I'm almost 100% sure that they made the film specifically as an allegory for the whole current pandemic. And that's a damn shame, because otherwise I have almost nothing to fault the film for, despite the perfect idea, casting, running time and setting. Three years ago I would have given this film a sweet four stars, but due to the subconscious nagging (over and over again) of the antivax theme, I can't go higher than a three... (12/15/2021)

If the last second had been cut, the film's mood would have changed and I would have gone higher, because the overall impression of Silent Night and its original premise and mood is not bad. But this is how the current situation plays into the hands of all those antivax (don’t believe the science) morons, mentally stuck somewhere in the Middle Ages, whose blatant idiocy we are all now paying for. I wonder if the creators are aware of this, or if it is an unintended effect beyond their plans. Because you can also read it differently, like “never give up”. But to release something so ambiguous now is, at the very least, very stupid. (12/04/2021)

This black-humor psychological drama with an expected global catastrophe, slightly reminiscent of the current world situation, is quite original and bizarre, but at the same time not very entertaining and amusing. I like the decent casting, I enjoyed the cheeky Annabelle Wallis the most, but the rest of the actors, even if they play their standard, don't really impress. The film is presented in an intimate way, it takes place in one evening in one house and with a minimum of characters and it doesn't escalate much, I didn't find it funny. The dialogues are ordinary and the atmosphere is a bit stiffing only at the end, which is not enough to satisfy me.
