A overcrowded and overwhelmed public hospital becomes a microcosm of modern-day France in The Divide, a comedy in which the tensions that lie at the heart of the Fifth Republic are turned up to eleven. Centering on a middle class lesbian couple on the verge of a break-up and a lorry driver member of “the yellow wests”, the film uses satire, absurdism and a cast of insufferable characters to present a visceral experience of the contradictions that define French society – and to puncture them with liberating, life-affirming laughter.
