The film depicts the history of two entirely different but interacting marriages. Mária is the manager in a female worker's hostel. She can meet her busy researcher husband and her children only at weekends. Mária defends Juli, who, defying all rules, running away from her drunkard husband, moves to the hostel with her child. János, however, follows her even to the apartment of Mária and tries to persuade her to try again. Their suffering-passionate relationship, the picking cross-questioning of Juli make Mari, who wants to intermediate between them, realise how empty her own family life is.
