An American Pickle (2020)

English Exactly the kind of film that, in the age of online streaming, has no chance of making it to theaters and will go straight to VOD. Otherwise, the movie is to be consumed like fast food - despite a few good jokes, there really is no memorable moment and you won’t remember it in a week.

Freaks and Geeks (1999) (series)

English Countless teen series of varying quality have been filmed. And then there's Freaks and Geeks. An excellent series with a perfect atmosphere and an unrivaled soundtrack. A series that isn't afraid of any topic, does not offer only happy endings and has discovered a ridiculous number of future movie stars for Hollywood. I can see why it literally has a cult status in the US today.

Hustlers (2019)

English I wonder which says more about the current American values - the fact that this movie made more than 100 million dollars in theaters, or that the biggest supporting "star" in the film was Cardi B, whom Time magazine ranked among the world's 100 most influential people? The fact that there is some eye-candy to look at doesn't mean it can mask the utter stupidity of everything else. I wanted to give this a reasonable rating for the sake of Lili Reinhart and Jennifer Lopez, but some of the pseudo life lessons and idiotic dialogues almost make me want to give it a “Boo!” rating.

Enola Holmes (2020)

English My review in a nutshell – perfect Millie, mediocre entertainment, lousy detective story. I didn’t really mind the blatant political correctness and feminism that received so much criticism here. That is the sort of thing we have come to expect of Netflix. Having said that, the film has other and much bigger flaws - the main one clearly being the script which makes it a complete hodgepodge that has absolutely nothing to do with a detective story. No surprising moments, no twists, no mystery, no unexpected revelations, no nothing - one huge disappointment. Out of the five story lines, barely one will make it to a satisfactory ending. As much as I was hoping to like the film, especially because of its cast, the result was a somewhat entertaining, but sloppily narrated detective story. Since this is about Holmes, it hurts twice as much. What I would like to highlight, however, is Millie Bobby Brown’s truly God-given gift for acting. I consider her to be, hands down, the greatest talent of the upcoming generation.

David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020)

English It got to me more than I had originally realized. I don't know what’s worse – the way we are decimating nature or the prognosis of what is yet to come. I must give credit to David Attenborough for being able to present an optimistic view of restoring our balance with nature. However, the future scenarios look so catastrophic and yet so realistic and logical that humanity is in for some serious trouble. Over the last 4 billion years of life on Earth, there have been five mass extinctions, and now the question is whether we are skyrocketing towards the point of no return, or we have already passed it, or whether humanity has the potential to recover and start actually taking care of the environment. Anyway, a great documentary, because if there’s anyone who has something to say, it's David Attenborough, who even at the age of 94 is still incredibly professional, with a more personal approach here than ever, which will surely make everyone stop and think. Thank you! “The living world will endure. We humans cannot presume the same…To continue, we require more than intelligence. We require wisdom.”

Mulan (2020)

English Pathetic. Mulan easily ranks among the worst and most boring Disney movies. There is nothing worth mentioning about this movie. A predictable story, logic holes, zero atmosphere and the whole thing is weirdly cut. Perhaps the worst thing of all is the practically non-existent and unintentionally funny action, where I would expect the creators of a movie about a warrior to really go to town. The battles are almost a parody, and it all feels terribly artificial (I can’t believe this cost 200 million, the comrades from China sure ripped them off). It is neither realistic nor fairytale-like. Let this film be evidence that even with these large blockbusters, custom-made one after another by the big shots at Disney, it does matter who is sitting in the director's chair. After Niki Caro’s poor effort this year, last year’s Aladdin will stand out even more, since Guy Ritchie is in an entirely different league.

Tenet (2020)

English A truly exhausting film that demands your full attention throughout its whole runtime, because once you tune out for even a single moment, you have virtually no chance of getting back on the same wavelength with Nolan, and the rest of your experience will get drowned out by the deafening noise and convolutedness of the plot. I must admit that the first time I watched it, I felt almost physically exhausted and was not far from getting lost in the plot. But in that mind-blowing moment, as the main character begins to understand and use his ability to change the flow of time, everything suddenly starts to fall into place, and it is one hell of a ride. Tenet is indeed Nolan's most ambitious film, and like all his other films, it will be subjected to a variety of, more or less justified, criticism. But as always, it is the only really must-see film of the year whose technical side, storytelling, and the way it is filmed relegates the rest of the Hollywood production to second-class status.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019) (series)

English While I used to watch every single race of the season as a huge F1 fan, in the last 10 years I usually make myself watch 3 races a year maximum, mostly bored by them. My passion for this sport has simply disappeared. But now I might have to reconsider, and I don't think I'm the only one. Drive to Survive is absolute perfection. A drama of epic dimensions, not necessarily about the technical side of things, but rather about hard work, ambition, rivalry, pressure, intrigue, and dirty tricks. This really is no fairytale about some nameless underdog making it all the way to the top; this is a harsh world where nobody messes around and even the greatest talent can be bought, a world where everyone wants to be first. However, in order for someone to win, the others logically have to lose, which is an absolutely unacceptable option for each one of the 20 drivers who are either selfish, arrogant, ambitious, aggressive, or all of the above, so drama is never in short supply. Honest and unadorned, perfectly edited and the storytelling ... every race, every team, manager, driver, each have their stories, some of which have a happy ending, while others often end up bitter as hell. S01: 10/10. In the second season, the joyride continues. The PR managers of even the largest teams realized that this series could help them a lot with the fanbase and tried to maintain a good name, but no punches were pulled even in this season, showing that this sport is not for the faint of heart. S02: 10/10.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)

English Just like Kick-Ass 2 tried to emulate the success of number one, Birds of Prey wants to emulate the success of Deadpool, and it is a similar flop. What I can praise is the style and Margot Robbie, who clearly enjoys playing Harley and the role of an unreliable narrator really agrees with her. Otherwise, it's pathetic. You can tell they have put a lot of work into choreography, but good ideas alternate with ridiculous ones almost reaching the level of parody (the fight at the end is not far from the ending of Hot Shots! Part Deux). The worst thing about this movie by far, however, is the cast, where none of the actresses fit into the team that was supposed to be the core of the movie. For example, Rosie Perez is synonymous with boredom. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as much as I liked her in Scott Pilgrim, is probably showing the worst performance of her career. And Ewan McGregor? Though an excellent actor, he should be praying that the next Star Wars movie with his Obi-Wan will succeed. Otherwise, he should really change agents, because everything he’s appeared in recently blew up like the Death Star, which is something to consider. But back to Birds of Prey. It's great that thanks to the girl power movement an unknown female director and screenwriter got a chance to shoot a blockbuster, but they managed to make a movie where the relationships between the girls in the team don't work, story twists don't work either, some of the dialogues are downright terrible and it’s all sloppily narrated. The result is a movie that may be a little better than the disastrous Justice League but grossed less than Green Lantern ten years ago! In short, not everyone has the comedic and storytelling talent of Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, and not every comic book gets supervised by a genius the likes of Matthew Vaughn.
