The Company of Wolves (1984)

English The visuals are brilliant for their time, and the werewolf transformation was fine, but it felt more like a fairy tale than a horror film. Still pleasantly entertaining and watchable. I wasn't offended. 60%.

Furious 7 (2015)

English The only franchise that goes up in quality from episode to episode, not down. This is a Band-Aid for Expendables 3 for me, because the number of familiar faces gathered here is mind-boggling. The 250 million budget is evident in every shot, which are goosebumps-inducing thanks to James Wan's craftsmanship. The highlights for me are definitely the car jump through the Abu Dhabi building and the car drop from the plane, these are scenes we haven't had the chance to see anywhere else yet. Of course, the well shot fights were a delight, surprisingly I liked Tony Jaa vs Paul Walker and Ronda Rousey vs Michelle Rodríguez fights the most (I've never seen a better female fight in my life), but even Jason Statham and The Rock and Vin Diesel gave each other some decent punches. There's also great humour provided by Tyrese Gibson, who is excellent as always, and there's no shortage of hot asses, spicy cars and decent music. My only complaint is the finale, which doesn't come as much of a surprise given the events throughout the film. Not counting Asia, this is the best American action film available. The farewell to Paul Walker was cute. 95%.

From the Dark (2014)

English A decent Irish atmospheric flick, easily watchable, but not too close to the previous one, Stitches, which was a level above in terms of fun and gore. Conor McMahon unfortunately doesn't show too much of the bad guy, the whole thing takes place in the dark, so night and headphones for better effect are a must. More could have been wrung out of this, but there aren’t many horror movies like this, so why not. 60%

Pumpkinhead (1988)

English A classic B-movie that will neither offend nor delight today. The film boasts a great looking main villain and decent pacing, but it lacked gore or any wow moment worth remembering. Had I seen the film 15 years ago, I would have definitely gone with a higher rating, but today only a fine three stars. 60%

The Big Hit (1998)

English I love these black-humor action thrillers from the '90s. Great fun from start to finish with a totally crazy and surprisingly original plot, lots of memorable situations, nobody can be trusted, everybody fucks with everybody, plus great young Mark Wahlberg and a good dose of action. Worth a watch. 75%.

Alleluia (2014)

English Fabrice du Welz will probably never become my favourite director, he always lures us with exploitation, but what we get in the end a psychological drama. Fortunately I didn't need a pair of blindfolds and a pack frozen vegetables on my balls to avoid falling asleep like in Calvaire, but I'm definitely not impressed. There a few titillating erotic moments and one raw brutal scene at the end, otherwise I didn't really find much atmosphere, pace or intelligence in this film. 55%

Vengeance of an Assassin (2014)

English I consider Panna Rittikrai to be an average director of average martial arts films (The Protector 2, Ong-bak 2: The Beginning and Ong-bak 3: The Final Battle), but I consider his latest effort to be perhaps his most accomplished, even though it’s on a similar vein in terms of script and direction, but the fights here are very decent. I was especially impressed by the original opening where ten guys in a warehouse do tricks with a ball while knocking each other down and punching each other (how cool was that!). There is plenty of action throughout the film and it's also quite varied and, above all, brutal, shocking and with decent choreography. But logic doesn't play a role here, there are things happening in the film that defy all the laws of physics (I appreciate the work of the stuntmen). An Asian flick that is fortunately enjoyable, but I couldn't get past a few logic holes. I'm saving the higher rating for Hanuman. 65%. A fine one-off for fans of the genre.

Dead Rising (2015)

English I was hoping for a more action-packed gore inferno, but without question, Dead Rising is a better made, bloodier and more entertaining horror film than the cerebral and boring home video Wyrmwood. It has a decent cast, it sticks to the game's template, with the array of inventive weaponry and a bunch of bad guys adding to the film's drive. I had a decent time, and if a better zombie horror movie doesn't come out this year, I'll up the rating. 65%.

Kill Me Three Times (2014)

English A decent and entertaining romp from the Aussies with a fairly convoluted story-building and a decently brutal final showdown. Nicely shot and acted, not boring and very playful. There's not much action, but I didn't demand it so much here, the film managed to keep my attention. 60%

The Killer (1989)

English Another great action classic, which I liked even a little bit more than Hard Boiled, but a little bit less than Full Contact, but all of them star the great Chow Yun-Fat, who is undoubtedly the action hero of Hong Kong. The action consists only of gunfights, which are very decent for their time, the opponents drop like flies, blood spurts quite decently and the ending in the church is a definite highlight. But this is not just about action it also has a nice story and some depth, so I definitely recommend it. A proper classic, the quality of which I can only confirm. 75%
